aus dem Schatzkästlein...

Subject: Usability Roundtable - Einladung
Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 09:50:43 +0100

Hallo

endlich haben wir es geschafft - die erste
Usability Roundtable Hamburgs!

wann: Montag 5.3.2001 @ 19:30 (bis ?)
wo: News Cafe (Ecke Wilhelm-Kaiser-Str und
Neustädterstr., Axel Springer Verlag gegenüber)
was: Usability Themen informell diskutieren -
z.B. Trends in Germany/Europe
ROI / Cost-Justifying Usability
Resources
Methoden
wer: Du und Deine Kollegen, Gäste, usw.
wie: einfach vorbeikommen

Bitte sag mir Bescheid per Email, damit ich ungefähr
weiss, wieviel wir sind. Noch fragen? just ask!

Bis dann,
Jim

In fact I see a strong relation to Bull Buxton's presentation at CHI ’08 in Florence. Not the closing keynote. The other one. Apple thinks good design is a present. Pixel-perfect mockups are critical. 10 to 3 to 1. Paired design meetings. Brainstorm meeting. Production meeting. Pony meetings.

What else does Apple do differently? 1. Apple does not do market research. 2. Apple has a very small team who designs their major products. 3. Apple owns their entire system. 4. Apple focuses on a select group of products. 5. Apple has a maniacal focus on perfection.

So is it possible for you to innovate like Apple? You need a leader who prioritizes new product innovation. You need to focus. You need the right people, and you need to reward them.

How does Steve Jobs’s mind work?

Why is it that companies with billions of dollars who can hire any designer or design firm in the world put out such crappy products?

Can customers truly tell a company how to innovate?

What can customers do then?

If a company is hiring a design firm, how can it know that it’s picking the right one?

If a company is hiring a designer (as an employee), how can it know that it’s picking the right one?

What are your top ten products of all time?

What are your ten worst products of all time?

Why has the One Laptop Per Child project met with limited success?

If a young person wants to be a great designer, what should he or she do?

Quote:

The first rule of open source development is also the reason for an inherent usability problem: "Every good work of software starts by scratching a developer's personal itch."

The result is a self-referential system – developers develop for themselves rather than for the average user or the target audience. Usability engineering is considered as superfluous extra. However, to provide a good user experience, it is the user's itch that needs to be scratched.

This article presents user experience activities in the context of OpenOffice.org. The author – co-lead of the User Experience Project – will discuss the status of building an open source community of usability professionals to improve the usefulness and usability of the application.

Usability im Unternehmen

Das Kapitel 4 "Usability im Unternehmen" Software Engineers and Interaction Architects" is a position paper for a workshop at Interact 2003 in Zürich.

Software engineers and interaction architects need to cooperate with each other in order to create software products that work, and that are usable and useful for the target audience. A look at reality shows that the cooperation does not function as smoothly as it should. The cause for this can be on the engineer's side, or on the designer's -- or on both sides. This paper identifies some differences in the mentalities that make it difficult to work together in one product team.
It needs to be said that successful product teams have many more components than just engineering and user interface design. To use Don Norman's metaphor: it is technology, marketing, and user experience that make up the three legs of a solid product. We also have to add product management, quality management, documentation, customer support, and upper management to the picture. Nevertheless, this paper focuses only on the relation between developers and HCI professionals. It is 7 (simple) ideas that foster innovation and team spirit:

Choose a good driving problem

Become immersed in related work

Clarify short-term and long-term goals

Balance individual and group interests

Work hard

Communicate with internal and external stakeholders

Get past failures. Celebrate success!
